Philip Jones joined Eyewitness News 9 in August 2006.
An Eastern North Carolina native, Philip was born and raised in Wilson — and that’s where his journalism career got its start. As a sophomore in high school, Philip began covering sports all across Eastern Carolina as an intern at The Wilson Daily Times. By the time he graduated high school, he was covering ACC basketball on hallowed ground such as the Dean Smith Center and Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Philip is a lifelong Tar Heel fan and headed to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for college. While at Carolina, Philip continued to explore his passion for journalism — he was a news and feature writer for the Carolina Alumni Review magazine, a reporter for the Carolina Connection radio news program and anchor/reporter for the Emmy-winning Carolina Week student television news program.
Philip got his start at Carolina Week as a medical reporter, but went on to serve as a general assignments reporter, sports anchor and news anchor on CW’s live newscasts. His work for Carolina Week earned him awards from the Society of Professional Journalists, the Hearst Foundation and the Broadcast Education Association. In 2005, Philip was recognized as a national finalist for the BEA’s News Anchor of the Year.
Although he misses Chapel Hill, Philip is glad to be back “home” in Eastern North Carolina. Philip is a Carolina sports fanatic, so while he’s not at work, there’s a good chance you’ll find him back in Blue Heaven hanging out with his amazing friends and taking in a Tar Heel football or basketball game. He also enjoys spending time at North Carolina’s amazing beaches or going camping in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
He’d love to hear from you, so email Philip at pjones@wnct.com.
