A North Carolina Sheriff resigned from his post right before he goes on trial for statutory rape.
Polk County Sheriff Chris Abril’s resignation takes effect tomorrow.
His trial starts Monday.
Sheriff Abril submitted a resignation letter. In it, he says the negative climate surrounding his service made it difficult, if not impossible, to perform his duties.
The Chief Deputy will take over the department while a committee searches for a permanent replacement.
