HICKORY, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina authorities are investigating the death of a 19-year-old sophomore at Lenoir-Rhyne University because of what they say are inconsistent statements by witnesses about his death.
The Hickory Daily Record reported Thursday that Harrison Kowiak of Tampa, Fla., died after an off-campus accident Tuesday. Catawba County sheriff’s officials said statements from students involved indicate Kowiak may have been injured during a capture the flag game.
Officials said Kowiak was taken to Frye Regional Medical Center with a traumatic head injury. He was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where he died.
For now, Sheriff David Huffman said Kowiak’s death is being treated as an accident.
Sheriff’s officials said university security contacted them Wednesday morning about Kowiak’s death.
