Chief Meteorologist for StormTeam 9, Phillip Williams, was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Phillip wanted to be a meteorologist from the time he was old enough to pronounce it.
He graduated from Rocky Mount Senior High School in 1983, and then earned his Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology from North Carolina State University in 1987. During his college years he wrote a weather forecast column for the Rocky Mount Evening Telegram Newspaper.
He was a weather intern for Carolina Power and Light in Raleigh. His first television job lasted a couple of months for a low power station in Rocky Mount. Phillip quickly moved to WNCT-TV in 1988 as the Saturday meteorologist. Within 3 months he moved to the primary position of Monday through Friday 6pm and 11pm.
Phillip enjoyed teaching a course for a couple of semesters on weather and climate at East Carolina University. He regularly visits with elementary and middle grade school children to talk about weather safety. Among his accomplishments is teaching a seminar on weather to emergency flight crews from across the country.
He has also served as the coastal North Carolina television hurricane expert at the Governor's Annual Hurricane Conference. Phillip has received many honors for community service. His hobbies outside of weather include playing racquetball, playing tennis, watching all sports, and studying the stock market. When time allows he enjoys flying and seeing the USA.
