Former Bayboro town clerk facing embezzlement charges

BAYBORO, N.C. (WNCT) - The former town clerk of Bayboro was arrested on embezzlement charges this week, according to Pamlico County Sheriff Chris Davis.

The sheriff said investigators arrested Mary Potter on Wednesday with felony embezzlement by a public official, accessing a government computer and two counts of forgery charges. She made her first court appearance on Friday.

In May 2015, Sheriff Chris Davis said the mayor and town attorney reported that she had admitted to the town mayor she had taken a large sum of money. It was later identified to be a sum of close to $67,000.

Shortly after the investigation was initiated, the sheriff said Potter resigned.

The sheriff's office turned it over to the SBI Financial Crimes unit to go through all the documents in September 2015. The report came back a few weeks ago and was turned over to the Pamlico County District Attorney's Office.

Potter bonded out earlier in the week on a $20,000 bond.
