CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (WNCT) --- Keeping our coastal environment clean takes effort from everyone, including our elected officials.
The Carteret Big Sweep organization has organized a week to draw special attention to clean up efforts in the county.
Friday’s event got county officials out to the side of the road to help pick up trash.
County Commissioner Mark Mansfield said he volunteered for the cleanup because every citizen has a role to play in keeping the coast clean.
“Whether you’re out on the boat,” said Mansfield, “whether you’re walking along the roadside, it’s really easy to just bend down and pick up a piece of trash and just carry it to the nearest trash can, put it in the back of your car. If we all do a little bit, it makes a big difference.”
The week will end with a big community cleanup on Sunday afternoon.
