GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) - For those waiting to file their taxes last minute you officially have one day left to do so.
You won't face penalties if your returns are postdated with Tuesday's date, April 17th, even if you can't pay your balance. Not paying by the deadline will result in an attached interest rate. However filing will keep you from harsher penalties by the IRS.
If you have not filed your taxes yet, you need to file for an extension. An extension gives you an additional six months to file, but not an extension to pay.
Also, any return changes need be completed by tomorrow's deadline.
“If you file the amended return by tomorrow it’s as if you filed it on a time basis,” said Ray Edwards, CPA with Page & Smith Public Accountants, “if you filed the amended return after tomorrow there will be interest."
This year's deadline was pushed back two days due to April 15th falling on the weekend and today's holiday, Emancipation Day.
