BAYBORO, N.C. (WNCT) - The Pamlico County Sheriff's Office is supplying further security to its deputies.
The department will receive $18,000 to buy its first deputy-worn body cameras.
The sheriff said the 14 cameras, one for each deputy, will add accountability to the office.
"It will help the command staff and those who are in charge of internal investigations," explained MAJOR Scott Houston, Pamlico County Sheriff's Office. "Instead of spending days and sometimes weeks on internal investigations, we'll be able to handle those complaints in a matter of hours."
The sheriff's office will apply for an NC legislature grant to pay for one out of every three cameras purchased.
If it receives the grant, Major Houston said the office might outfit school resource officers and jail staff with cameras.
The office hopes to have the cameras in place by the first of next year.
