Sweltering today with storms by mid-week

Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. -

Good Afternoon Eastern North Carolina! I'm First Alert Meteorologist Dontae Jones. Here's your forecast:

THIS AFTERNOON:  The weather pattern will remain unchanged today, so expect sunshine and heat along with a 20% chance of summertime thunderstorms. Highs will reach the lower 90's inland and upper 80's at the coast (along and east of highway 17). The heat index will again be around the 100 to 105 degree mark. You will want to stay hydrated, wear light clothing and stay in the shade.

TONIGHT: Another typically warm, humid and quiet night ahead. Partly cloudy skies with temperatures in the lower to mid 70s inland and upper 70s along the coast will take us into the overnight.

A LOOK AHEAD:  An approaching cold front will bring a slightly better chance of afternoon storms by Wednesday and Thursday. A second front will arrive by the end of the weekend, bringing autumn-like temperatures for early next week. The chance of rain will increase by Sunday and Monday.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Dolly has formed in the southern Gulf of Mexico. The system will likely remain weak and head for Mexico. Elsewhere, tropical storm formation is not expected in the next 48 hours. For an even more complete update, visit the WNCT 9 First Alert Hurricane Center by clicking HERE.
