Strong Storms Heading Our Way

Updated:
Chief Meteorologist David Sawyer Chief Meteorologist David Sawyer
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Hello! I'm WNCT 9 First Alert Meteorologist David Sawyer with your forecast for eastern North Carolina.

THIS EVENING:  There will be a few storms possible through mid-evening across eastern North Carolina.  Otherwise, it will be continued hot and humid with temperatures only falling to around 80 degrees by 11 pm.

TONIGHT: It will be warm and very humid again tonight with overnight lows in the mid 70's inland and upper 70's along the coast. As in previous nights this week, we could see some areas of patchy fog.

TRACKING OUR NEXT WEATHER MAKER:  A cool front will slide into the region on Thursday to increase rain chances and may spark a few stronger storms. This will likely be the more significant chance of strong to severe weather this week.  Although an isolated storm may form anywhere in eastern NC during the day on Thursday, deeper inland sections will have the best of these storms associated with the actual frontal system from early afternoon through the early evening hours.  Coastal sections will have the best chance of stronger storms from late afternoon through midnight, as the front pushes off the coast later Thursday night.

LOOKING TOWARD THE WEEKEND:   As the front moves off the coast, storm chances will be much lower on Friday.  The front will stall offshore for Saturday and Sunday as the Bermuda high edges closer to the area, helping to keep a chance for some showers and storms in the forecast for the upcoming weekend.

TROPICS:  Tropical Depression Two which continues to scoot toward the west-northwest in the central tropical Atlantic Ocean has weakened to a Tropical Wave.  The official forecast track from the National Hurricane Center keeps this storm system very weak as it moves across the the Leeward Islands and the eastern Caribbean Sea by Thursday.  At this time, this tropical wave presents no threat to the United States.
