Hot temperatures along with a high heat index this afternoon

Dontae Jones Dontae Jones
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Good Thursday Morning! I'm WNCT 9 First Alert Chief Meteorologist Jerry Jackson with your forecast for eastern North Carolina.

THIS MORNING: A typically warm and humid morning is expected as you wake up. Temperatures are in the lower to mid 70s inland and mid to upper 70s along the coast. We'll look for partly to mostly sunny skies across the morning with light winds, which will help allow for some patchy fog across the area as you make your way in to work and school.

THIS AFTERNOON:  As we head toward the afternoon hours, the forecast calls for partly cloudy skies and predominantly dry for most sections but we'll leave a 20 to 30 percent of a sea breeze driven shower or storm. A couple of storms may get to be strong to possibly severe with gusty winds and heavy downpours being the main threats. The other weather story today will be the heat. Temperatures will reach the lower to possibly mid 90s inland and around 90 at the coast. With the very high humidity levels, the heat index will again be around the 100 degree range.

TONIGHT: Look for partly to mostly cloudy skies overnight tonight with a 20 percent chance of an isolated shower. Temperatures will remain warm in the mid 70s and it will continue to be quite muggy as well.

A LOOK AHEAD:  A refreshing change in temperatures is expected this weekend, however a mixed bag as far as the forecast goes. Look for some rain and storms on Saturday but a dry and sunny day for your Sunday.

TROPICS: The National Hurricane Center continues to monitor an area of thunderstorms approaching the Windward and Leeward Islands. The disturbance will push through the Caribbean Sea over the next few days. The National Hurricane Center gives this system a 70 percent chance of being named within the next 5 days and a 50 percent chance within the next 48 hours.
