Led by a trio of double-figure scorers and a double-double from Britny Edwards, the East Carolina women's basketball team defeated Conference USA foe Marshall, 54-47, at Minges Coliseum on Thursday night to improve to 9-1 at home on the season.
Senior point guard Celeste Stewart led the Pirates (14-5, 4-2 C-USA) in scoring for the third straight game with 13 points and five assists. She added three rebounds and two steals in the contest. Brinty Edwards recorded 12 points and 10 rebounds for her team-leading ninth double-double of the year and also contributed two steals, one block, and an assist while shooting 62.5-percent from the field. Whitny Edwards finished the game with 11 points, six boards, three assists and two steals, while Kyani White tallied seven points, four assists, and one steal.
Marshall (6-13, 0-6 C-USA) won the tip and Erica Woods quickly drove it to the basket for the first points of the game. The early part of the game was back-and-forth until the 12:40 mark, when White tied the game at 14 with a three-point field goal to kick off a 10-0 run by the Pirates. The ECU defense did not allow a field goal for seven-and-a-half minutes as the Pirates took a 21-14 advantage. Shay Weaver broke the scoring drought for Marshall with a trey at 6:53, but ECU pushed its lead back up to eight (27-19) on a jumper in the paint from Stewart. The Herd would not back down and Norrisha Victrum hit a three at the halftime buzzer to cut ECU's lead to three (29-26) at the half.
The Pirates controlled the second half as they never allowed Marshall to take the lead. White notched a layup at the 17:18 mark to break a 33-33 tie and the Pirates would not relinquish the lead again. For the rest of the game, ECU held the lead and extended the margin to as many as eight on two occasions. At 2:46, Whitny Edwards hit a three to put the Pirates up 49-41 on Marshall. East Carolina would go on to win by seven points, 54-47.
As a team, ECU collected 10 steals and forced 20 turnovers, while tallying 19 points off of turnovers. The Pirates out-rebounded the Herd 38-33.
Woods led Marshall with 14 points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal, while Chukwuka Ezeigbo notched 11 points, nine boards, one block and one assist.
