The stars and crew of the upcoming movie "Iron Man 3" are filming in Cary this week.
Crowds of teens and young adults, all fans of the franchise, watched production from a sidewalk along Crossroads Boulevard Monday. Filming was taking place inside Epic Games studios.
Fans saw some extras, but no major stars, they said. A tree resembling a Christmas Tree was also spotted outside of the game studio, perhaps hinting that the film will take place during the holiday season.
The crew is expected to also film around the SAS campus over the next few days.
Cary Police say drivers should expect police-controlled delays on Weston Parkway from NC 54/Chapel Hill Road to Harrison Avenue on June 6 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
The police department says the closures are to "accommodate activity registered with the North Carolina Division of Tourism, Film, and Sports Development."
Production is mainly taking place in and around Wilmington. Principle photography on the film began in late May with a shoot at Cape Fear Club on Chestnut Street in Wilmington, N.C. The shoot called for two cast members and 20 extras.
In April, thousands of people turned out at Crabtree Valley Mall to sign on to be extras in the film "Caged Heat" -- a working title for the "Iron Man 3" production.
That "Iron Man 3" will shoot under the working title "Caged Heat" may be meaningless – much like Michael Bay's "Prime Directive" title for the "Transformers" trilogy – but that hasn't stopped comic book fans from speculating. Many have been quick to point to the title’s similarity to Marvel superhero Luke Cage and the fact that the latest "Iron Man" film may be used as a vehicle to launch a Luke Cage spin-off.
While much of the details of the film's shooting schedule are shrouded in mystery, some employees at SAS in Cary had hinted on social media that filming will take place at SAS.
SAS spokesman Trent Smith, however, said he could not comment on whether "Iron Man 3" would be filmed at SAS.
The film's publicist also said he did not know whether SAS was part of the film’s schedule and said he had not seen a schedule yet.
Shane Black will take over directorial duties from Jon Favreau, who helmed the first two "Iron Man" films. Black's credits include 2005's "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," which also starred Robert Downey Jr.
"Iron Man 3" stars Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle. Sir Ben Kingsley is also reportedly in talks to play a villain in the film, however he "will not be the primary villain, according to insiders, and it is not clear what role he will play."
James Badge Dale and Guy Pearce have also been in talks to join the production, though it is unclear what roles they would play.
The film is set for release May 3, 2013.
