'Iron Man 3' trailer gives first glimpse of villain The Mandarin

It's finally here.

Marvel dropped the first trailer for "Iron Man 3" this morning. And. It. Is. AWESOME!

As previously suspected, the trailer gives us a glimpse of protagonist Tony Stark's personal world being completely destroyed at the hands of The Mandarin (Sir Ben Kingsley).

The footage shows Stark's California mansion being destroyed by missiles, his gallery of Iron Man suits completely wiped out and Stark lying on an operating table.

Interestingly, there are also several scenes that show the new Iron Man armor fully functional without Stark actually being in it. At one point the armor looms aver Pepper Potts (Gwyenth Paltrow) while Stark sleeps, and another scene shows the armor kneeling over what appears to be a beaten Stark.

Less catastrophic parts of the trailer include a new suit that attaches to Stark one piece at a time, Iron Man saving people from a ripped-apart plane and the debut of a new Iron Patriot suit -- which may belong to James "Rhodey" Rhodes (Don Cheadle).

The film's synopsis, released late last week, explains that the "brash-but-brilliant industrialist" will be pit against an enemy "whose reach knows no bounds."

"When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy's hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle," the synopsis reads.

"With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?"

Filming on "Iron Man 3" took place in Wilmington, N.C., Cary and Durham, as well as South Florida and China. The film is set to open May 3, 2013.

Shane Black took over directorial duties from Jon Favreau, who helmed the first two "Iron Man" films. Black's credits include 2005's "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," which also starred Robert Downey Jr. Favreau will return to the series in an acting role as Happy Hogan, Stark's chauffeur and personal assistant.
