JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - The Onslow County Sheriff's Office says Linda Hulsmann died from strangulation.

That's the latest from a news conference in Jacksonville this morning.

Other information coming out of today's news conference, Hulsmann and Yates, the man accused of her murder, were close acquaintances.

Deputies say on October 31st they were dispatched twice to the victim's residence because she was having a problem with Yates, reportedly over money for prescription drugs.

Hulsmann was told at that time she could take out warrants on Yates and he would be arrested. She declined to do so.

A report suggests Yates attacked the victim to get prescription drugs he paid for her.

Sheriff Ed Brown says "Regardless of what the underlying current may be here, the death of anyone is a tragedy, regardless to what led up to it".

The sheriff says Yates had a prior record involving weapons and drugs.

Brown says "In our record management system, Mr. Yates has been involved with weapons and also involved with drugs".

Nine On Your Side's Smitha Rao is following the latest developments from today's news conference and will have more information as it becomes available.
