GREENVILLE, N.C. - Deputies jailed three men for a shootout during an attempted robbery.
Demetrius Hines, O-Joshua Roberts and Travis Pittman are in custody.
Deputies charged them with attempted first degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon.
Pitt County Sheriff Neil Elks says three men walked into the house, demanded money and shot at the two men inside.
He says one of the victims shot back. His children were in a car just yards away. Deputies say the suspects sped away in a car but crashed in to a ditch and took off running. One of the suspects was on crutches.
Deputies say K-9 units found Hines, Pittman, and Roberts lying on the ground. They say they found drugs on all three of the suspects and guns hidden nearby.
Prison records show Roberts was charged with First Degree Murder in 2005 and later released. Pitt and Hines were both charged with assault with a deadly weapon. Deputies say the victim was acting in self-defense and will not be charged.
Investigators say the robbery is likely drug-related.
All three suspects are in jail under a 2-million dollar bond.
--- Original Story ---
PITT COUNTY, N.C. - Three men are in custody after Pitt County Deputies say an apparent robbery turned into a gunfight.
It happened on Manning Rd. after 5:00 p.m. Tuesday night.
"Several shots were fired exactly how many we don't know. We're very concerned about the shooting taking place kids are on the scene here," said Pitt County Sheriff Neil Elks.
Sheriff Elks tells us shots were fired between two cars, the apparent victim and three suspects in an attempted robbery.
"It's just a careless episode of misconduct people being out of control," he says.
He says the three suspects tried to get away in their vehicle, when they crashed in to a ditch.
They then took off and foot. K-9 units were called to the scene and the men were found laying down on the ground, armed and with drugs, according to deputies. One person was shot in the hip area, and was taken to the hospital. We are unsure of how serious the injury is.
Investigators are still trying to determine the motive behind the robbery, but say it may be drug related.
They say two guns were recovered from the scene, and they are trying to figure out if the apparent victim was justified in shooting back at the other three men.
"With everything going on in Greenville to have this happen out here is really scary because now it's not just happening in the city its happening even out in the county and that's scary," said neighbor Kathy Vassalo.
More arrest may be made as the investigation continues.
