GREENVILLE, N.C. - “I think he is so cute. I mean, I think he is very handsome. Handsome like Prince Charming. Why doesn’t he want to play with me when we go outside at school? Does he think I’m beautiful? I’m going to get married to him and he’s going to be a police man and I am going to be on TV just like you.”
Those words from my 4-year-old daughter. Yes, at 4, my daughter has her first crush. I’m pretty sure my husband is ready to jump off a cliff while I cling to my rosary and pray…because let’s face it, what else can I do.
I remember my first crush vividly…but I was not 4. I was in the 3rd grade at Holy Name of Jesus School and the love of my life was named Jason. (I’ll leave out the last name, but trust me, he knows this story). We were “so in love,” that one day at the lunch table we declared that we were getting married. Not after high school or college…no, we were getting married on that very day.
So with all of our little friends in tow, we walked to the front yard of the convent.
Our fellow 3rd grader, John, performed the ceremony before it was abruptly cut short by our disapproving teachers.
There was a visit to the principal’s office, a call home from the parish priest and I think a couple of Hail Mary’s involved when it was all said and done.
And let’s be honest, had it not been for all of that, my parents never would have known about my grade school “husband.” So I guess deep down, I love the fact that my little girl wants to tell me all about her little crushes. But at 4 years old…I have a LONG road ahead of me. And if the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree…then I am in trouble. My mom calls it payback.
