Southeast Elementary's playground dreams come true

It's a big day for Southeast Elementary School in Kinston. Their dream of a new playground is coming true.

Last year teachers and students started raising money to build a new playground. They were able to raise enough for one swing set.

A few months ago they applied for a grant from Ronald McDonald Charities and won. 9 On Your Side was there as the students found out in December. They ended up getting a total of $25,000 for new playground equipment.

Friday volunteers will be on hand to install the new playground.

In Lenoir County, Southeast Elementary School got a big surprise on Wednesday. It's getting a new playground.

Last year teachers and students started a campaign to raise money to build one. They were able to raise about $7,000. With the money, they bought one swing set for the older kids. Now thanks to the grant, they're going to get even more.

On Wednesday, Ronald McDonald Charities surprised students by presenting the school with a check for $25,000 to buy age appropriate playground equipment.

Fifth grader Jayla Brown is glad their hard work paid off.

"I actually feel happy; because, we work very hard for this and we just needed more and we do good stuff to earn it," said Brown.

For students and teachers today's surprise couldn't have come at a better time.

"So thankful to see it come to fruition in this mighty way. Especially, at this season of the year," said 5th grader teacher Brenda Griffin.

Griffin says the school plans to have the equipment installed before the end of the school year.
