More than 2,000 gallons of sewage spilled into the Tar River.
It happened Friday morning.
Greenville Utilities says a manhole overflowed at the intersection of West 5th Street and Albemarle Avenue.
They say a grease blockage caused the overflow.
A response team cleared the blockage in 30 minutes and used a chlorine solution to clean up the area around the manhole.
