We're answering your questions and debunking rumors: we're hearing the Greenville town common could be the new home to a hotel and that's not sitting well with a lot of people.
But the rumor is only half right.
Greenville Recreation and Parks Director Gary Fenton says there are plans for improvements to the town common and a hotel could be one of them.
"It was the first time we had ever done a master plan for the town common," said Fenton.
Fenton says don't let the word "plan" fool you, they're using it loosely.
"It's not etched in stone. It's conceptual but it gives you some direction of what you might want to do. What you might not want to do," said Fenton who says exactly what to do isn't just up to his department.
The city owns the common but East Carolina University owns some of the land around it. Both groups have a master plan and both have to find a common ground on how to grow the city center.
"I think having that focal point. That vibrant heart of your city makes all the appendages belong together. It pulls them together," said Fenton.
The city's plan involves moving the amphitheater and making the area more accessible to entertainment and eventually revenue.
The ECU plan involves a proposed hotel and even though the rumor puts it on the town common that's not the case.
We checked and it actually is proposed for the lot across from the common on the corner of Reade and 1st Street.
Fenton also debunked the rumor.
"The whole concept is, do we partner with the public sector? Can we find a way to make the resources available to make that dream come true, to make a good park a truly great park and be the central focal point of the city of Greenville?"
There's currently no plan for funding the current master plans. Fenton says, more than anything, they hope all this will start a conversation to get the ball rolling.
