BRISTOL, TN -

They look like payroll checks, but they're not.

Bristol, Tennessee Police want to find the people - local residents whose names they know - who are passing fake payroll checks at Tri-Cities Food City grocery stores.

"Looking at the checks, you can see they're check quality paper," said  Bristol Tennessee Police Detective Mike Anderson.   "The checks were printed out.  There was nothing that appeared suspicious at the time until the checks started coming back."

Using their real names and not concealing their identities, the brazen check cashers take the phony payroll checks from several businesses and institutions - including the Bristol newspaper, Virginia Intermont College and Lowes Home Improvement - to a grocery store clerk.  Because they have I.D. to match the name on the check, they're able to get the cash quickly.

"They would take the checks in.  They would cash them.  They would come back out.  They would split the money with the person who actually printed the checks out," said Detective Anderson.

"This is new to us.  They're not trying hide their name. They're local people. The checks are going through at the store then coming back after they go to the bank."

Police have arrest warrants in this case for Carly Stanley, Hallei Powel, Tyshawn Blackwell, and Jamaine Talford.

If you know where police can find them, call Bristol TN Police at 423-989-5600.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, "Scammers use cameras, keypad overlays, and skimming devices - like a realistic-looking card reader placed over the factory-installed card reader on an ATM or gas pump - to capture the information from your card's magnetic strip without your knowledge and get your PIN."
