Car slams into house and catches on fire

Posted: Updated:

A car crashes into a house, catching both on fire.

It happened in Winterville on Brevard Road off Highway 903.

Investigators say the car was traveling at least 65 miles per hours when it flew into a house.

No one was inside the home at the time.

The Highway Patrol has identified the driver as 37-year-old Tony Wiggins. He was taken to Vidant Medical Center with non life-threatening injuries. Troopers say Wiggins told them he had brain surgery back in 2006 and is on seizure medication.

"Most of the damage was to the underside of the house. There's not a whole lot of heat damage inside. There's a little bit of smoke and a little bit of water damage but that's about it," said Jonathan Heltzel, with the Winterville Community Fire Department.

Troopers charged Wiggins with reckless driving. They say the case is closed.
