The Coast Guard is working to install temporary aids to navigation that is necessary to open a substitute route for the Hatteras and Ocracoke ferry.
The ferry route was suspended in January due to severe shoaling.
Coast Guard crews will place 14 new aids this week, which will serve as a temporary channel until the main ferry route dredging can be completed. That project should be done by March 31.
