Two men charged with choking a dog to death pleaded guilty in a Pitt County court.
19-year-old Kendrick Fitchett and 21-year-old Demetrius Crumble admitted to felony cruelty to animals.
A neighbor told 9 On Your Side that she saw the two men beat and choke a dog with a telephone cord.
Both men will serve 90 days in the Pitt County Detention Center and go on 24 months of supervised probation.
A third man charged in the case has his hearing Thursday.

Three Pitt County men have been indicted by a grand jury on cruelty to animals. That's after they, allegedly, choked and beat a puppy to death.

A neighbor witnessed it all.

It happened in Greenville on Carolyn Street.

Pitt County deputies arrested Demetrius Crumble, Evan Harrington and Kendrick Fitchett saying the three men choked a 4-month-old Pit Bull puppy with phone cords, took turns beating the puppy with a PVC pipe and then threw her in a ditch.

A neighbor, Amy Wirthlin, and her 15-year-old daughter, watched in horror and called 911.

"My daughter and I actually located her deceased body in that ditch with her collar on," said Wirthlin.

Deputies say the men never admitted to the crime and told investigators the dog had been sick.

There was some confusion on Carolyn Street Thursday when 9 on your side was there. Wirthlin thought she found the body of a second puppy in her neighbor's yard but when a deputy arrived he confirmed it was the same dog.

"I left with the intent, and told the individual that owned the dog, that he was in charge of properly disposing the animal when he got released. Initially, most animal cruelties are misdemeanors so we figured it would be an in and out thing," said Deputy Jeff Allen.

But because of the nature of the crime, deputies ended up charging all three of the men with felony cruelty to animals and failure to dispose of the dog. Animal control picked up the dog's body Thursday morning.

"Unfortunately the images in my head will stay with me," said Wirthlin.

"There's no respect for life whether it's human or animal. And you know, we deal with a lot and see a lot unfortunately, but when it comes to animals and kids it kind of takes it to another level," said Deputy Allen.

As for Wirthlin, she's taking it upon herself to be a voice for the innocent puppy.

"These three men won't be able to do this to another animal again," she said.

The men are scheduled for another court date in May.
