Whitny Edwards and Kyani White scored in double figures for the Pirates as the East Carolina women's basketball team shot 46.7-percent in the second half to defeat UCF, 56-41. The ECU defense limited the Knights to just 16.7-percent shooting from beyond the arc in the game.
With the win, East Carolina improves to 19-7 on the season and 9-4 in Conference USA, while UCF falls to 11-16 overall and 5-8 in C-USA action.
Whitny Edwards led the Pirates in scoring as she tallied 13 points and added six rebounds while posting four assists and three steals. Kyani White posted a 10-point performance while contributing four boards, three assists and one steal. Tatiana Chapple and Britny Edwards each posted eight points in the contest, while Ariana Jackson led the squad with seven rebounds. Celeste Stewart added a team-leading five assists to go along with six points, three rebounds, and two steals.
Despite a slow start in the first half, East Carolina managed to come back from a pair of scoring droughts and take a 24-20 lead at halftime. Kyani White tallied all 10 of her points in the frame as she helped the Pirates erase a seven point deficit (20-13) at 4:59 and finish the half with a four-point lead (24-20) after sinking a long three from almost half court at the buzzer. She finished the game shooting 40-percent from the field and 50-percent from three-point range.
The Pirates quickly added to their lead in the second half as they took a 10-point advantage (32-22) at the 17-minute mark on back-to-back layups by Chapple. ECU's offense shot nearly 50-percent in the frame as it went on an 8-1 run to take a 49-31 lead with 7:09 remaining in the game. The Pirates continued their offensive tear and lead by as many as 19 points (37-56) with less than a minute left to play. ECU went to on win its 19th game of the season with a 56-41 victory over the Knights.
UCF ‘s Gevenia Carter led all scorers with 15 points and added six rebounds to go along with three steals, and one assist. Erika Jones cleaned up the glass with a game-high 16 boards and also posted six points, two steals, a pair of blocks and an assist.
The Pirates return to Minges Coliseum for their last home series of the season when they play host to UAB on Thursday, February 28, before welcoming Memphis to town on Sunday, March 3. The ECU-UAB game is scheduled to start at 7:05 p.m. The contest is ECU's Play 4 Kay game as well as the annual "Pack the House Challenge." The game will be televised on CBS College Sports.
