A Camp Lejeune Marine was arrested for starting a fire at his father-in-law's home at Emerald Isle.
A neighbor called in the fire after seeing smoke at a house at 8717 Plantation Dr around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Investigators determined the fire had intentionally been set by pouring an accelerant throughout the residence. While they were processing the scene, an Emerald Isle Police Officer was approached by the suspect, 22-year-old Cpl Jamison K. Hardy, who confessed to setting the fire.
According to police, the suspect entered the home through a side garage door where he obtained a container filled with gasoline. He then went inside the house, locked the dog in the bathroom and proceeded to douse the home with gasoline. He then fled on foot.
Police there say mental health issues and family problems may be a factor behind the fire being set.
Damage to the home is estimated at $200,000.00. There was no one inside the residence at the time the fire was set. The dog was found dead inside the bathroom.
Cpl Hardy is a Marine stationed with Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Marines at Camp Lejeune. He has been charged with 2nd degree arson, felony breaking and entering and felony cruelty to animals. He was placed in the Carteret County Jail under a $25,000.00 secured bond.
His first court appearance was scheduled for Thursday morning.
