New Bern mayor Lee Bettis will not seek re-election

NEW BERN, N.C. -

Several Craven County cities and towns will vote for mayor this year.

New Bern, Havelock, Trent Woods, Bridgeton, and Dover all have mayoral elections this fall.

Mayor Lee Bettis of New Bern told 9 On Your Side he is not seeking re-election.

He was elected in 2009. Since then he says he's completed all the things said he would do, including hiring a new city manager, taking over the housing authority, and starting to revitalize poor neighborhoods.

He says he always envisioned being a one-term mayor.

"I don't want to be a politician for life. That's not my bag. My bag was to solve some problems. I solved some problems that I could solve. And now I'm going to get back to life," said Bettis.

New Bern's mayoral election is October 8. The deadline for filing paperwork to run for mayor is July 19.
