FAA says some NC airports could close, others have shifts cut

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

Five smaller air traffic control facilities could be closed, and two could have overnight shifts eliminated, according to a report from the Federal Aviation Administration.

The FAA said Coastal Carolina Regional in New Bern, Kinston Regional Jetport, Hickory Regional, Smith Reynolds in Winston-Salem and Concord Regional could all be closed, according to a recent document.

In addition, the airports in Fayetteville and Greensboro could have overnight shifts eliminated, the FAA said.

The federal government is looking for ways to slash costs after the sequester. The FAA reported Feb. 22 that it was planning for $600 million in spending cuts in 2013.
