Deadly crash, shooting believed to be drug-related

Posted: Updated:

Investigators in Onslow County are digging deeper into a car crash that killed a man.

It happened Wedensday.

Deputies found the victim in a car full of bullet holes.

Onslow County deputies found a man dead in his car Wednesday night. They discovered the car, while investigating a report someone was shooting at the Gainey Mobile Home Park on Highway 53.

They found 20-year-old Watson Chentlen dead inside the car, with bullet holes in the driver's side.

"One in the fender, number one was in the fender, two three and four were in the door where a person would be sitting. Which would indicate the shooter was concentrating on that door for a purpose," said Ed Brown, Onslow County Sheriff.

Six shots hit the car. One of them hit Chentlen in the chest.

Sheriff Brown says investigators aren't sure which killed him, the crash or the shots.

"We've got a crash, we've got a deceased person and we'll leave it up to the medical examiner to tell us what possibly caused his death," said Brown.

Investigators aren't saying if they've discovered a motive for the shooting or who fired the gun. They found a 40-caliber hand gun in the car. They're testing the weapon to see if it had been fired.
"Drugs were found in an associate's possession of his. What part they played in this I don't know, but drugs were a part of this as possession," said Brown.

Chentlen has a criminal background. Deputies arrested him for drug possession in 2011 and again last year. Something that leads them to think it was all drug-related.
Deputies don't know yet who fired the shot, but suspect the victim knew.

As part of the investigation, deputies also recovered a television in Chentlen's home someone reported stolen earlier this year.
