Kinston boys, girls both take home Eastern Regional titles

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

The Kinston Vikings will defend their 2A state title. The Kinston girls will join the boys for a shot at a pair of state titles.

Denzel Keyes scored 18 points and hauled down 9 rebounds to lead Kinston to a 68-41 trouncing of Fairmont in the 2A Eastern Regional title game. Jossh Dawson scored 14 points for the Vikings, now 27-2 on the season.

The Kinston boys will play Cuthburtson in Chapel Hill on Saturday at 2:30pm for the 2A state championship.

The Kinston girls then followed suit, blasting Jordan-Matthews 56-37 for that regional title. Monique Lofton led the way with 16 points.

The Lady Vikings will now play Canton Pisgah for the 2A state girls championship on Saturday at noon.

In the Boys 1A Eastern Regional championship DeShawn Freeman poured in 25 points and added 16 rebounds as Rocky Mount Prep pounded East Carteret, 77-58.

Rocky Mount fell in the 3A Eastern Regional title game, losing 68-64 to Oxford-Webb.  

In girls play, Chapel Hill beat West Craven 59-51 in the 3A regional finale. Jamie Cherry scored 22 points for the Eagles.

Charori Major scored 20 points but Lejeune suffered its first loss of the season as River Mill Academy rolled to the 55-38 victory in the 1A regional title game.
