Victim identified in Onslow County murder

Posted: Updated:
JACKSONVILLE, N.C. -

The search is on in Onslow County. Deputies say a shooter opened fire in a neighborhood Sunday night near Highway 53.

Investigators were back on the scene Monday, looking for clues in the shooting that killed 48-year-old Joseph MacDonald. They say it happened at a trailer in Winter Wood Mobile Home Park just before nine o'clock.

Neighbors say they weren't sure what to think when they heard the shots.

"I was sitting in the house and I heard a loud bang. It sounded like shooting, but my wife said it was fire crackers. I said, 'No, fire crackers don't sound that loud," said Thomas Grant.

Grant says he and his wife have lived in Winter Wood for about 15 years. He says this is the first time anything like this has happened since they've lived there.

He says seeing the crime scene tape around the trailer and investigators in their neighborhood is definitely an eye-opening experience.

You always hear about it happening in other places, but never in your area. But now here it comes," said Grant.

This is the second shooting on Highway 53 in the past week. Investigators aren't saying if the two are related.
