The Edwards twins transferred to East Carolina a few years ago following in the footsteps of their parents. Now seniors Britny and Whitny have led the women's basketball team to its best season in recent history.
"We just want to set the tone each and every day," said Whitny Edwards. "We want to end this season strong."
The Lady Pirates are the two-seed in the upcoming Conference USA Tournament. ECU has won 21 games behind the career seasons of the Edwards sisters. Britny hopes that there are more accomplishments to come for this special group.
"This might be our last time playing together so we're just trying to make the best of it," said Britny Edwards. "We want to do what we can to help our team win and hopefully make history at East Carolina."
Their Dad, Theodore "Blue" Edwards, played basketball at ECU in the late 1980s. He moved on to play in the NBA but his greatest memories from the hardwood might have come this year watching his daughters.
"I had a chance to coach them so I've seen them grow fro 8-9 year-olds playing to now 23 year-olds. I'm very proud of them," said "Blue". "I'm proud of their athletic accomplishments and what they've done in the classroom."
"Blue" isn't the only Pirate proud of the Edwards twins. Conference USA Coach of the Year Heather Macy is one of their biggest fans.
"They're very different in how they play," said Macy. "The number one element they have in their game is their competitiveness and their work ethic."
Despite a great season up to this point, their biggest challenge lies ahead. If ECU does move on through the C-USA tourney and on to the big dance a reason for it will certainly be because of the play of the Edwards sisters.
Whitny leads the Pirates in scoring this season, while Britny leads the team in rebounding.
The Lady Pirates will play tomorrow night at 8:30 p.m. against the winner of Memphis vs Southern Miss.
