950 workers will lose their jobs when a eastern Carolina poultry processor closes its turkey slaughtering plant.
House of Raeford Farms Inc. announced Thursday it's shutting down the Raeford plant within the next 6 months. That will happen after they turn out frozen turkeys for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The company blames declining consumption for the closure.
David Witter, a company spokesman, says the decision isn't related to the federal sentence of probation and a $150,000 fine imposed two weeks ago for knowingly committing Clean Water Act violations. Prosecutors maintained the company discharged water containing turkey blood and internal organs into the town of Raeford's sewage treatment plant
