Pitt County Schools has selected its "Teacher of the Year."
Joy Carter is the 2013-2014 Teacher of the Year for Pitt County. She's a music teacher at Elmhurst Elementary and has worked there for the past 18 years.
The honor came with several cash prizes and gifts from local businesses. Plus, she gets to drive a new 2013 Hyundai Elantra from Joe Pecheles for a year.
"It's very special," Carter told 9 On Your Side after her win. "It's quite an honor. It's a shock. I had no idea that I'd be chosen as a music teacher because last year's Teacher of the Year was also a music teacher. So it is very honoring and humbling in many ways. I'm just proud."
First runner-up was Patrick Searcy of Falkland Elementary.
Other nominees for the annual award included:
Lynnly Martin, Hope Middle
Cathy Marsh, A.G. Cox Middle
Anita Koen, South Central High
