Friday at the ACC Tournament

Posted: Updated:

Many fans feel like the ACC Tournament really doesn't start until Friday.

The quarterfinals feature all four of the top seeds and Friday's first two games give us a nice semifinal for Saturday between top seed Miami and North Carolina State.

The 'Canes finally shook off Boston College in a strange game. Miami opened with a huge run and led 21-6. Boston College had a run of their own, 21-4 and actually led the game at halftime.

The game was tied with three minutes to play, before Miami finally pulled away. The Canes went on another run, this time 14-3, to win going away.

I like the Hurricanes and I hope they go a long way in the NCAA Tournament.

N.C. State fans hope the 'Canes start building for the NCAA's after tomorrow. State meets Miami at 1 o'clock tomorrow in the first ACC semifinal.

Scott Wood led the way for State with seven three pointers in the Pack's 75-56 win over Virginia.

Wood smiled afterwards knowing that he just had one of those games that great shooters have every once in a while.

Maryland stunned #3 Duke in the third quarterfinal on Friday.

Dez Wells was the star for the Terps. He scored 16 of his game-high 30 points in the first half.

I said earlier that Coach K was talking more like a coach who wanted to stay healthy in this tournament rather than win the thing as we previewed the tournament. The Duke players just said it was a bad night. One more bad night and Duke's season will come to an abrupt end.

Many here say they think Duke's loss may move the Devils down to a second seed but I don't feel that way. I don't think Duke will be the overall national number one seed, but I do think the Devils will be number one in the East.

Upsets are what make "March Madness" so special. Maryland may be trying to leave one final mark on the ACC before bolting to the Big Ten!

The final game of the night, as expected, went to North Carolina. The Tar Heels hardly broke a sweat in advancing by blasting Florida State, 83-62. P.J. Hairston had 21 points and former Kinston star Reggie Bullock kicked in 17 in the victory.

That sets up tomorrow's semi-finals. I think NC State will upset Miami and I like North Carolina over Maryland. With that said, we'll have a Hurricanes/Terps finale on Sunday!

We'll check back in Saturday night..... BB
