State lawmakers are trying to clamp down on the use of unmanned drones before they become widespread. A bill filed this week in the General Assembly would restrict government and law enforcement use of drones in warrant less searches. Monroe's police department recently received approval to buy one at a cost of $44,000. Drones are generally less expensive than helicopters and experts expect them to proliferate.
"We're at the start of an experience similar to the introduction of the printing press, the steam engine, or the computer," Peter Singer with the Brookings Institute said.
The ACLU of North Carolina endorses the bill. They say it will protect people's privacy rights.
