
The Kinston boys and girls basketball teams won the 2A state championship on Saturday. The Kinston boys led by seniors Josh Dawson and Denzel Keyes beat Waxhaw Cuthbertson 56-53.
The Vikings played the Cavaliers last year in the title game and won 55-53, this game was very similar. Kinston was down at the break but made a huge run in the second half to win the game. Denzel Keyes had 18 points and 10 rebounds while Josh Dawson and Brandon Ingram chipped in 12 points a piece.
Ingram scored the all important bucket that put Kinston up 56-53. He followed that with a block at the other end to keep the defending state champs up by 3. Cuthbertson had a chance at the buzzer to tie the game but missed.
In the early game the Lady Vikings beat Pisgah High School 51-40. Lydia Rivers led Kinston with 13 points, 9 rebounds and 9 blocks.
The Lady Vikings were also down at halftime but bounced back as Jada Faison and Monique Lofton chipped in 13 and 11 points respectively.
For the Kinston girls its their first ever state title. For the Kinston boys its their third in four years and second in a row.
