Donor in rabies case was Jones County airman

Posted: Updated:

Transplanted organs from a man from the east have rabies.

William Small, an airman from Jones County, died in Gainsville, Florida.

At first, doctors thought he died from food poisoning. They never tested his organs for rabies.

No one suspected it at the time.

But Small's organs were transplanted into 4 people, one of whom also died. That's when doctors learned he actually died of rabies.

9 On Your Side talked with Small's ex-girlfriend. They have a son together.
