NEW BERN, N.C. -

A local hospital is moving full steam ahead with its plans for a major expansion.

CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern is in the process of getting state approval for its $64 million expansion and renovation project proposal.

On Wednesday the state health department held a public meeting on the project at the New Bern-Craven County Library, which hospital officials described as procedural.

Hospital officials presented their plan to build a three story tower next to the hospital to expand women and children's services.

9 On Your Side spoke to the one person from the public who showed up for the meeting. He came from Raleigh to offer his company's services to install audio-visual equipment.

"I think we can fit in somewhere if the opportunity arises, but I think it's great for the community and hospital itself to serve its patients," said Dan Williams, account executive at Strategic Connections in Raleigh.

The expansion project includes enlarging the hospital's emergency department, building new surgery rooms, and reconfiguring its parking lot. Detailed architectural work is expected to start next year, said hospital spokesperson Megan McGarvey.

A local hospital is getting ready for the largest expansion in its 50-year history.

CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern is undergoing a $64 million expansion and renovation.

The hospital is planning to build a three story tower next to the hospital to expand women and children's services. The hospital will also expand its emergency department, build new surgery rooms, and reconfigure its parking lot.

The vice president of Facilities and Safety, Leslie Allen, says the ER room was only constructed to see about 30,000 people.

"Today we're seeing over 70,000 people in that space, so it's time to look at doing an expansion to meet those needs," said Allen.

Groundbreaking on the tower is expected at the end of 2014. The whole project should take about five years.
