A local hospital is getting ready for the largest expansion in its 50-year history.
CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern is undergoing a $64 million expansion and renovation.
The hospital is planning to build a three story tower next to the hospital to expand women and children's services. The hospital will also expand its emergency department, build new surgery rooms, and reconfigure its parking lot.
The vice president of Facilities and Safety, Leslie Allen, says the ER room was only constructed to see about 30,000 people.
"Today we're seeing over 70,000 people in that space, so it's time to look at doing an expansion to meet those needs," said Allen.
Groundbreaking on the tower is expected at the end of 2014. The whole project should take about five years.
