Epic Games releases 'Gears of War' prequel

CARY, N.C. -

Tuesday was the release day for "Gears of War: Judgment,"  the prequel to Epic Games' series which reached more than $1 billion in sales.

WNCN visited the company's Cary headquarters to get the full story behind their new game.

In the game, members of the "Kilo Squad" are being judged in a court case followed by action.  This story is told through a fiery series of flashbacks.

"They've made some mistakes, and they are being judged," said Alan Van Slyke, senior producer at Epic Games.

"The story is all about them re-telling what they did and why they did it," he said. "The game captures a sense of urgency, with the old cast, and new members."

"One of the things we did during the development is bring in the community, bring in our fans, show them what we are working on," Van Slyke said.

"Gears of War: Judgment" is M rated for violence.

The game includes new weapons for the player, including a new kind of grenade launcher and new types of grenades.  Epic Games utilized Fort Bragg Special Ops training to teach actors in the game to portray their roles realistically.

Epic Games has plans to continue with more titles in the highly successful franchise.

"We are definitely proud of this title," Van Slyke said. "In the fact that we continue to push the ‘Gears of  War' franchise."

The idea this time, he said, is "we can go back in time."
