CAPE HATTERAS, N.C. -
Governor Pat McCrory declares a state of emergency for Highway 12 in Dare County.
It's a move that'll help the Department of Transportation move forward with short-term solutions for ocean over washes.
Just last week, Transportation Secretary Tony Tata attended a town hall meeting on the Outer Banks. McCrory and Tata surveyed the area and had a chance to talk to people who live there about more reliable routes to Hatteras Island.
The money will help the DOT rebuild the highway along the S-curves over the next three years. Those improvements could start this spring.
The DOT also has $21 million in Hurricane Sandy emergency funds to help repair the beaches.
