Wilmington police tell us that they responded to a report of a small child that had been abandoned in the parking lot of a dollar store. Witnesses told police the 6-year-old had been in the parking lot playing with toy cars for hours. As police were trying to track down a parent, they found Jonathan Curtman passed out in the bushes. Curtman is the child's biological father. They found two packets of "spice" (synthetic marijuana) in his pockets.
Police discovered that the 28-year-old father had brought the child from Jacksonville to Wilmington on his motorcycle. Curtman apparently brought the toy cars at the store and told the child to play on the ground behind his motorcycle. Police then think the father went over to the bushes and passed out. Curtman was arrested for child abuse and placed under a $5,000 bond. The child was later released to its mother.
