Posted: Updated:

A captured and killed fox is being tested for rabies after two attacks were reported in Orange County Tuesday.

Orange County Animal Services reported responding to a fox attack in the Dogwood Acres neighborhood in Chapel Hill Tuesday morning. Authorties believed the animal to be rabid.

Animal services alerted neighborhood residents of the attack and searched for the animal. No fox was found at the time of the search.

Tuesday evening, another person was attacked by a fox near Southern Village.

Orange County Animal Services said a fox was killed and impounded Wednesday morning. Animal services believe the animal to be responsible for the attacks on Tuesday.

The fox is being tested for rabies.

Authorities stress that residents should remain alert until the impounded fox is confirmed to be rabid.

If a fox is spotted from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., please call animal services immediately at 919-942-7387, ext. 1. If it is after hours, please call 9-1-1 and the on-call Animal Control Officer will be paged.
