Proposed ban against teen indoor tanning passes NC House

GREENVILLE, N.C. -

Prom season is here, and soon lots of high schoolers will hit the tanning beds. But state lawmakers want to stop them with a proposed teen tan ban.

Health advocates say there's no reason young people should be exposed to ultraviolet radiation and possibly get skin cancer. But others say it takes away freedom of choice.

The bill, which would ban indoor tans for those under age 18, passed the state House of Representatives Wednesday 94 to 22 in favor of the ban. Now it's headed to the state senate.

Under the current law, indoor tans aren't allowed for anyone under 13 unless there's a doctor's prescription. Anyone 14 to 17 has to get their parents' permission for an indoor tan.

Salon shop owners say the ban would hurt business.

"We live in a free country, America, and we're supposed to be land of the free, and we're losing our rights and freedoms every day," said Ori Eubanks, the owner of Eubanks Tanning in Kinston.

Lawmakers are considering the bill for health reasons. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says tanning beds can be dangerous, particularly for young people.

"I've actually had skin cancer before, so I'm a very big proponent of sunscreen," said Jessica Forbes, a 23-year-old ECU grad student.

The CDC says people who start tanning before age 35 have a 75 percent higher risk of melanoma, which can be fatal.
