St. Patrick's Day Booze It & Lose It campaign nets 690 DWI arrests

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Increased patrols by law enforcement officers during St. Patrick's Day weekend resulted in 690 driving while intoxicated arrests across the state, according to officials.

The increased law enforcement presence on the road was part of the Governor's Highway Safety Program's St. Patrick's Day "Booze It & Lose It" campaign.

The campaign, which ran March 15-17, had officers statewide conduct 2,391 sobriety checkpoints and dedicated patrols. Counties with the highest number of DWI citations were Wake (54), Guilford (33) and Forsyth (31).

Officers also issued 1,458 safety belt and 258 child passenger safety violations, 5,842 speeding violations and 555 drug charges. In addition, they apprehended 407 fugitives from justice and recovered 9 stolen vehicles.
