Beloved gymnastics coach remembered after sudden death

Posted: Updated:

Students, friends, and family are remembering a beloved coach at Cedar Point Gymnastics.

51-year-old Michael Lee Underwood was shopping at Walgreens in Cape Carteret on Wednesday when he fell to the ground while standing in line.

His nephew says EMS tried to revive Underwood with CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Chris Brown, a former 9 On Your Side employee, believes his uncle died of either a heart attack or brain aneurysm.

"He was just fun to be around. He had a lot of life in him, and to see that taken away soon, so soon, I mean, it just breaks your heart," said Brown.

Underwood will be remembered for helping each of his students reach their potential, said Marti Feagle-Johnson, the owner of Cedar Point Gymnastics.

"I was sad that he's gone, and today I just realized he isn't coming back," said 9-year-old Morgan Clerkin, one of Underwood's students.

The funeral service will be held at Andrews Mortuary & Crematory at 4108 S. College Road in Wilmington on Monday at 6:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations can be made to the Mike Underwood Memorial Fund or the North Carolina USA Gymnastics Organization. For more information, go to: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Cedar-Point-Gymnastics/150217358341173?ref=ts&fref=ts
