ELM CITY, N.C. -

A woman shot one of two intruders as she hid in a closet in her home in Elm City Friday morning.

The Wilson County Sheriff's Office responded to a breaking and entering call on Tonya Road around 10:45 a.m. The homeowner called 911 saying she was hiding inside a closet in the residence.

A suspect, Christopher Devonte Joseph of Rocky Mount, approached the woman and she shot him. Joseph and the other suspect, Michael Daquarius Bynum of Rocky Mount, then fled the home.

The woman's husband said she was home that day because she was sick.

Joseph was found by arriving members of the Wilson County Sheriff's Office approximately 300 feet from the home. Bynum was found in nearby woods.

"A guy was laying down where blood is on the road, yelling 'Help me, I'm going to die. I've been shot on the chest,'" said neighbor Sandy Crumpler. "The other fellow walked into my brother's yard and Wayne told him to stop."

Crumpler continued with, "He started walking towards Wayne and Wayne pulled a gun on him and told him to stop. Then he veered off to the woods."

Joseph was transported to the hospital where he remains in custody and in stable condition.

Law enforcement found electronic equipment and other household items that did not belong to the victim in the suspect's vehicle.

Joseph and Bynum are charged with breaking and entering and possession of marijuana.

The woman will not face any charges.

"They need to be behind bars permanently because if they get out they'll probably do the same thing again," said neighbor Harold Roberson.
