Hundreds of students compete at Science Olympiad

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. -

Thousands of students from our state put their science skills to the test at the annual Science Olympiad.

Students in middle school and high school spent their Saturday at East Carolina University.

The competition featured dozens of events from astronomy, to bottle rockets, to elastic gliders.

The science competition was originally scheduled for January but had to be pushed back due to weather.

Students and organizers say it's a chance to show off their passion for science.

"I think it's good. I like building, designing, just construction type stuff, or engineering type things," said junior Thomas Manning

"They get the recognition that they should be giving them all the time for the hard work they do, and so many times it gets overlooked. Yeah this is their day to shine, their day to do what they love,' said Science Olympiad State Director, Kelly Fair

The top performers from Saturday's regional tournament will advance to the state tournament.
