Dozens rally in New Bern in support of same-sex marriage

NEW BERN, N.C. -

While the debate over same sex marriage floods the national stage, people are voicing their opinions here in the East.

Dozens rallied at the New Bern town hall in support of marriage equality on Tuesday.

Of course, not everyone's happy about it. A protestor also showed up.

"Gay or straight, black or white, marriage is a civil right!" the group chanted.

The rally was part of nationwide movement, this one sponsored by PFLAG Carteret/Craven, which supports gay and lesbian couples.

"We hope the nation can find love in its heart and opportunities to heal the division that have been before us," said Vana Prewitt, a spokesperson for PFLAG.

"Why would we deny the same right to loving parents who are not of the opposite sex? "She said.

But on the other side of the street, figuratively and literally was Patrick O'Connell. "I'm against homosexual marriage," he said, "It's the age old institution of marriage as God intended it, God created it between one man and one woman."

He brought a giant wooden cross to town hall and yelled across the street at the group.

"They're out here standing for a lie that people can be alright with God and still be in their sin, in particular their sin of homosexuality," he said.

"All kinds of love are to be honored and respected and the right of marriage is a civil right," said Prewitt.
