WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -

Authorities say a small plane crashed in Winston-Salem in a wooded area, killing two people on board less than a mile from where children had gathered for an Easter egg hunt.

Lt. Rick Newnum of the Winston-Salem Police Department says the plane went down about 12:50 p.m. Sunday. He says the children at the Graylyn International Conference Center were never in any danger. No one on the ground was injured, and no buildings were damaged.

Spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen of the Federal Aviation Administration in Atlanta says the plane had left North Wilkesboro and was headed to Washington, N.C.

She says the plane was a fixed-wing Lancair LC-42.
