KINSTON, N.C. -

For the first time in over two decades, Lenoir County has a new sheriff.

Chris Hill was sworn in as sheriff this morning at the courthouse. He replaces Billy Smith who retires after 24 years.  Hill has been with the Lenoir County Sheriff's office for 30 years, most recently serving as chief deputy.

Hill tells 9 On Your Side that his first big task is getting the new Lenoir County Jail online and dealing with all the new challenges that comes with opening a new facility. He also tell us that are several personnel positions that he needs to hire.

After settling in to his new office he hopes to start reducing crime in Lenoir County rather than just containing it. He plans on getting the community more involved in preventing crime though community watch programs.
